You cannot tell if someone is healthy just from looking at them! Living in a larger body does not mean that you are unhealthy, and health exists across a spectrum. We believe in health at every size, and that people living in all bodies deserve access to health and health care.

When you come to Sore Spots, we readily welcome you to receive care & therapy on our treatment tables no matter your activity level, body size, shape and composition. EVERY BODY is entitled to have experiences that therapeutically, ‘feel good’.

Obesity is complex, and is due to much more than just lifestyle choices. Our body composition is determined by our genetic makeup, and can be impacted by stress, hormones, medical conditions, and many other factors.

Here at Sore Spots, we want you to know that we broadly recognize the complexity of body weight regulation as well as the medical strain that may be associated.

FYI:

BMI (body mass index) is ineffective at determining a person’s health related to their weight. BMI is only useful when looking at weight across a population. The National Institute of Health 1st called obesity a disease in 1998 & the American Medical Association declared it a disease pressing for care in 2013.

TREATMENT NOTES:

  • Remember that during treatments you will only disrobe to your comfort level.

  • For table treatments, we only ever undrape the area that we are working on at that time.

  • For larger body types, we can extend the width of our tables to allow for greater arm comfort.

  • We use additional pillows, wedges & positions such as side lying work to make sure your body gets the most out of every treatment.

  • Our electric lift tables have a weight capacity of 600 lbs & are regularly maintained.

  • Many of our larger bodies prefer receiving barefoot massage therapy due to the broad depth of contact and pressure that can sometimes feel like a better ‘fit’ for larger bodies than typical hands-on massage treatments. However, our goal is to work with you to create a treatment plan that fits your goals, while helping you feel better in a way that is respectful to you. We offer many types of treatments, and will work with you to find what fits best for your body.

“Ideal” body types have changed through time - it’s interesting to note the correlation that the National Institute of Health declared obesity a disease in 1998 and then there was a shift in the beauty standard in the early 2000’s to very thin.
