What is CranioSacral Therapy?
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch modality that focuses on the body’s central nervous system — the brain, spinal cord, and surrounding tissues. By releasing deep-seated tension and restrictions, CST supports the body’s natural ability to restore balance, relieve pain, and enhance overall well-being.
During a session, the therapist uses subtle hand placements to assess and improve the movement of cerebrospinal fluid and the function of the craniosacral system. Many clients find the experience deeply relaxing and restorative, often noticing improvements in both physical and emotional health.
CST may be beneficial for individuals experiencing:
Migraines and headaches
Chronic pain and muscle tension
Fibromyalgia
Post-concussion symptoms
PTSD or emotional trauma
Stress and anxiety
TMJ dysfunction
Sleep disturbances
Infant and childhood disorders
Motor-Coordination Impairments
What Should I Expect?
At Sore Spots, your CranioSacral Therapy visit begins just like any other. You’ll check in with our reception team before being welcomed into the treatment room by your Registered Massage Therapist (RMT).
CranioSacral Therapy is performed with the client fully clothed, resting comfortably on one of our cozy massage tables, complete with pillows, blankets, and optional heating pads. You can choose whether you’d like to stay warm and bundled or at a steady, neutral temperature — your comfort always comes first.
Your therapist will begin the session with a gentle, full-body scan, making light contact at various points from head to toe. This helps them tune in to the rhythm of your central nervous system (CNS) and assess areas of restriction or imbalance.
Using subtle movements and delicate manipulations, your therapist will work to identify “weak points” within the CNS and trace them back to their possible source in the body. Once located, precise manual techniques are applied to help release those areas, restoring ease, balance, and improved function throughout your system.
Many clients find the experience deeply calming — often describing sensations of warmth, gentle movement, or a feeling of spaciousness in the body.
Common Misconceptions:
“It’s just head massage.”
While the name might suggest otherwise, CST involves the whole body — not just the head. The therapist may gently work with the spine, pelvis, or other areas to help release restrictions affecting the craniosacral system and overall balance.
“It’s only for people with chronic pain or major injuries.”
CST can be deeply beneficial for anyone, even without specific symptoms. It’s often used as part of a regular wellness routine to reduce stress, improve sleep, and promote a sense of calm and clarity.
“It’s a form of energy work.”
Although craniosacral treatments may feel energetic or meditative, the approach is based on anatomy and physiology — focusing on the gentle movement of the craniosacral rhythm and the connective tissues surrounding the central nervous system.
